When the Detroit Red Wings beat the Canucks 3-2 in Vancouver this week to win their ninth straight game, the club tied a franchise record for most consecutive victories. Believe it or not, 41-year old goaltender, Dominik Hasek, was one of the main reasons the Wings have been so hot of late. Heading into Friday night's play, the veteran backstop had been between the pipes in seven of those victories, including four straight.
As a matter of fact, "The Dominator" was virtually unbeatable in three of those games, shutting out Edmonton and Nashville in consecutive starts and extending his shut out string to 181 minutes and 17 seconds in his next game between the posts for Detroit against the Canucks. On Tuesday night, Vancouver's Henrik Sedin finally found a way to solve the two-time Hart Trophy winner when he scored at 7:49 of the second period with his team on the power play. Before giving up a goal to the Sedin and Canucks, the six-time Vezina Trophy winner had not allowed a goal since 6:32 of the second period against Columbus on Nov. 4th.
The shutout streak is the best of Hasek's career so far. Prior to the 181:17 streak, Hasek's career best of not allowing the opposition to score came during the 2000-01 season when the netminder didn't give up a goal in 178 minutes and 33 seconds as a member of the Buffalo Sabres. [fox]
